On this date, in 1929, this military aviation pioneer performed the first "blind flight" from Mitchel field, proving that one could fly from take-off to landing using only instruments.  As a Lieutenant Colonel, this aviator lead the top-secret attack of 16 B-25 bombers from the USS Hornet on Tokyo, for which he received the Medal of Honor.
